SANTA BARBARA PRINTMAKERS VISIT TO LUMINO PRESS
When members of Santa Barbara Printmakers visited Lumino Press on May 10, owner John Balkwill shared examples of completed projects, demonstrated press operation and worked with participants to print a keepsake he had designed in honor of the visit.
John started by sharing examples of artists’ books, portfolios and other materials for which he provides design, printing and binding services to clients. Several examples illustrated how text such as a poem or narrative can be combined with fine art images/illustrations, printed on hand-made papers and beautifully presented in special folders, hand-bound covers or clamshell boxes. John also showed a variety of business cards, invitations, and marketing pieces that he produces for clients seeking a hand-made, artisan-designed look.
In the second portion of the visit, John demonstrated operation of the Vandercook UN-1 Cylinder Proofing Press used for letterpress and relief printing and a vintage hot stamp machine used to print decorative hot stamp foils. Participants were then invited to print John’s wood engraving, Mountains, on a prepared text page to produce their individual keepsake. Each print was then enclosed, along with a backing sheet, in an elegant, dark grey folder, hot-stamped with the LUMINO name.
We would like to thank John for sharing his knowledge, creativity and enthusiasm so generously with SBP. Also, Joyce Wilson, who has known John for many years, helped to plan the field trip and Bay Hallowell served as liaison to the Organizing Committee. And Lisbeth Springer for initiating, organizing and making the visit a wonderful experience for all.
